ORIGIN OF "NUNG TALUNG"


Mr. Sompong Choojit the leader of the Nang Talung hand-crafted’s group in Phathalung province said that Nang Talung is one of the folk performance arts in the South of Thailand. It’s the art of shadow play which originally brought in to Southern part by the Brahmin. Nang Talung shadow play is mainly play for Bucha the sacred.
In the old days, Nang Talung Shadow play will performance according to Ramayana’s story. Most of the Nang Talung figure will emphasis on the Rishi sculpture, Brahmin sculpture, Pra Lak and Pra Ram sculpture’s and so on.

Later, the figure’s pattern of Nang Talung has been developed. There is the mixture between the way the Chawa’s Talung figure was made which is more delicate and more lively and the Thai’s figure, plus the imagination of each sculptor which is now become the pattern of Nang Talung puppets in Thailand.



Professor Sawat Wathujeekrit said that Nang Talung or Talung is the art of shadow play. It’s the folk performance in the Southern part of Thailand which use the Talung figure to narrating the story and company with the southern classical music. In the previous times, Talung is the play which brought into the royal palace by the King. On those periods, there are 2 kinds of plays which originally happen outside the royal. The 1st one is the play which use the human being to play and the 2nd one is the play which use the figures which imitate the way human being are; the dressing. And use the light to show the beautiful of the dressing.
Talung figure is made from raw cowhide or raw buffalo hide. The pattern of each figure is different from the others. In the beginning, there is no colour in Talung figure; only the pattern is there to reflect the light from the lamp. The pattern of each figure will not be the same; it is according to style of each sculptor. Each sculptor will have their own way of expressing the delicate, liveliness of the figure.
Professor Khur Suphasiripong has said about the Nang Talung puppet that. Talung figure in the old days was made from the leaf of Mark; one type of the tree originally plant in the south. But since the Mark’s leaf is not so strong and easily damaged, so later, cowhide and buffalo hide has been replaced the Mark’s leaf because it’s more stable and sticky. And later the sculpture has put the Thai style, which is more delicate to the figure. Talung will play Ramayana’s story.
